Day 7 - Troy Cassar-Daley and Kasey Chambers
We went to a concert today that had a disappointing crowd. It was a fund raiser for the R U OK campaign but some of the artists told the audience about their struggles, which dampened the mood even further than the small audience had. Performers like Adam Harvey, Lyn Bowtell and Brad Butcher should have filled the hall, but this was the third fund raiser this week.
In the afternoon I went with Chris and Neen to see Troy Cassar-Daley at TRECC, the entertainment centre. As we parked I saw a dust storm approaching. Our side of town wasn't badly affected, but the airport terminal lost power and a plane had to wait on the runway for 20 minutes till the storm passed.
Troy's concert was celebrating the "Ladies" of country music. Kasey Chambers was the only one to complain about the use of the word "Ladies" instead of women, but her reason was because of her "poddy mouth". She sometimes swears on stage and incorporates colourful language into her songs. Apart from this the concert was wonderful. Troy sang some of his own songs and some classics. All of the best female performers were willing and able to juggle their schedules to be there, including Kasey, Beccy Cole, Sara Storer and Felicity Urquart.
This evening we were back at Wests for the Kasey Chambers concert. She throws her heart and soul into her performances, and her song writing. Most of the audience started singing with her "And you be the captain, And I'll be no one ..." and "Am I not pretty enough ...". This was the last concert of her 20 year anniversary tour of her first solo album "The Captain" which won the 1999 ARIA Music Award for Best Country Album.
My complaint about all the wonderful shows we have seen is that all of the musicians in the backing bands have been men, except for one woman newly recruited as the fiddler in Shane Nicholson's band. Even at the Concert for Joy the band was all male. At least Beccy Cole manages to find great female musicians for her band.
