Winton Dinosaurs
Three of us had tickets to the Age of Dinosaurs Museum, about 30 minutes drive from Winton. Anita stayed with our critters and Harvey. We originally planned to leave Winton on Monday, but had decided to pack up camp and leave this afternoon. It was a good decision - while we were at the Museum Anita was told the power would be permanently turned off at midday. With the temperature hovering around 33° we cut short our dinasaur tour and went back to the showgrounds to hook up.
We had paid $360 to stay on a powered site for a week, which is very expensive, particularly since we had no water on tap and no power for two days, and suffered a number of interruptions to the power when we had it. We had an email saying we could stay until Monday - we not unreasonably assumed the power would continue until Monday. Council management of the showgrounds camping areas has been hopeless!
We packed up in the early morning when it was cooler. It was my first and probably last sighting of dawn in Winton.
Our drive to Barcaldine was uneventful. We booked in for a week at the Homestead Caravan Park close to town. The only pub we could find that serves food on Sunday night is the Union. I ordered pizzas at 6pm and waited until after 7pm for them to be ready. They were very disappointing!
I filled in time taking photos of some of Barcaldine's surviving pubs. Many burned down more than once, or have been demolished. I don't think I could sleep in one of these hotels with the risk of fire.
