Bill Chambers at Quirindi
Before leaving Coonabarabran we stopped at Feathers Cafe for take away coffees. It was too hot to take the little critters out of the air conditioned car, so Anita stayed with them while I bought the coffees.
We drove to Quirindi to see a Bill Chambers concert at the Royal Theatre this evening. The road is badly damaged in places over the floodplain. There were at least 20 floodways in the 150kms trip. One floodway was particularly rough and eggs fell out of the fridge when it was opened.
The caravan park is small and unattended. We found a site offering some shade from a tree in the morning. I prefer to be exposed to the sun on the door side in the morning when it is generally cooler, and have the afternoon sun on the other side of the van so we get shade outside the door for Blue and Tilly when it is not too hot. Today it was too hot to let them out for any time. I walked him under the shade of trees being careful to look out for snakes. Apparently snakes have been seen in the area and on the nearby oval.
The theatre is only a short walk from the caravan park but clouds were building around us so we took the Toyota. Thunder and lightning and heavy rain started before the show ended so I was able to get our friends home safely doing two trips.
Bill Chambers had made a point of asking the organiser to have a local singer as the opening act, and Carly Robinson scored the gig. She was supported by Steve McCauley a talented guitar player from Gunnedah. We saw him performing with Allison Forbes in Newcastle (before Covid). Bill made an impromptu change to the plan for his show by arranging for Steve to join him on stage for most of his songs and it worked really well.
When we arrived Bill was outside having his photo taken by a photographer from the local paper. I took advantage of the opportunity. I was wearing a T-shirt I bought at the last Bill Chambers concert we attended in Tamworth. It reads "don't be a dickhead" and he noticed it. This was his advice to Kasey when she was starting her solo career.
