Moonta Bay
It was back to colder weather as we packed up in Clare. We drove to Kadina and found a place to park with the caravan, then walked to Woolies for cat food as it was on special. In the historic area of town I discovered Cafe Deluxe. I tied Blue to a post outside the door where I could see him. I heard a little bark and when I looked to see why, there was a large grey cat inside the cafe looking out at him. The decor in the cafe was also delightfully eclectic. Many of the historic stone buildings in South Australia are only maintained because they attract commercial tenants such as real estate agents, doctors, dentists and lawyers.
We continued to Moonta Bay where we will be staying for two nights. Our site is at the edge of a small cliff above the beach. The wind is very strong and the Bushtracker rocks with the biggest gusts in excess of 50kph. I hope the winds continue to blow onshore otherwise I might worry we will be blown into Spencer Gulf.
We planned to have lunch at North Beach Kitchen near Wallaroo, but failed to research the parking situation before discovering we had driven onto a no through road. Fortunately we could reverse the van and found a parallel park nearby. The wind was blowing sand off the beach. At the restaurant we were able to sit outside away from the wind. This pattern on the decking is caused by the wind blowing sand up through the gaps. The silos in the background of the cafe photo are near the jetty where wheat is loaded onto ships.
I walked out on the jetty with Blue and two friends. He didn't like the wind so I had to carry him. He was grateful for his human windbreak.
Fortunately our concert was held in the caravan park camp kitchen, otherwise it would not have been possible to hear the entertainment with the wind. Beccy had organised a folk trio named The Beggars to perform for us. One of the singers/guitar players is also skilled on the mandolin and mouth organ. Before Covid the group had been travelling around Australia singing songs by the Seekers, but they also play some good original songs. They did a good job singing "I've Been Everywhere" which names dozens of Australian towns and is sung at a very fast pace.
