Coober Pedy to Woomera

We left Coober Pedy about 9.15am to drive 375kms to Woomera. As we came further south there were large green areas, and a couple of lakes. We stopped at Lake Hart which is beside the Stuart Hwy. The first thing Tilly did was jump up onto the picnic table. Blue is camouflaged in the red dirt.

The lake itself is within the Woomera prohibited area, and people who posted selfies of themselves walking on the salt when the lake was empty have received naughty notices from the Senior Compliance Officer. There was lots of water in the lake today. The route for the Ghan railway passes between the lake edge and the Stuart Hwy. The train did not conveniently pass during our brief stop, but I used modern technology to take a screen shot of a video I found on the internet. Our Roadie mates left Coober Pedy before us and found themselves driving alongside the Ghan for part of their trip.

The track down to the lake resembles crazy paving. The "lines" must be formed from rock that is harder than the rock in between the lines.

When we arrived at the caravan park at Woomera we had to make a phone call to a very officious sounding Shane. He was obviously able to see us via a camera as we spoke to him. He told us what site we had been allocated in this run down park. At least the cost is only $25 per night.

I took Tilly for a long walk on her lead. She is improving every day and we haven't had any more crazy episodes of her running laps inside the Bushtracker. She had her afternoon nap resting her head on Bluey.

It was only about 28° today but tomorrow the forecast is 34°. We are heading further south to Port Augusta, but the forecast is the same. On Saturday the temperature will reach 37° with strong winds.

I rode my scooter around town after we set up camp. At the height of activity here in Woomera testing rockets and missiles, there were about 7,000 residents. Now there are fewer than 200 in the Woomera village. There are literally hundreds of empty houses, flats and barrack blocks. I saw about four cars on the road and one woman in RAAF uniform at the nearly empty community store. There is an outdoor museum with rockets on display, but it is not very exciting. I spotted a small patch of green grass, but when I went closer to see if there are prickles, I saw the no dogs sign. I had hoped it would be suitable for Blue to have a run without getting more dust on him.
