ARC Day 9 - Midge Point to Charters Towers
Today we drove about 380kms from Midge Point to Charters Towers, stopping for lunch at Home Hill. There is a free Comfort Stop at Home Hill including a modern camp kitchen on the main street. This was built in the hope of attracting travellers to spend time and money in town.
Unfortunately 90% of the shops are closed and for sale or rent. On one side of the street all of the shops are closed. There is a new IGA as the old building burnt down 3 years ago. A Bendigo Bank and pharmacy survive in the new complex. There are no coffee shops, hairdressers or retail stores still trading. A local told me a new Coles and Woolworths at Ayr 13kms away killed the old town. There are murals around town painted in the hope of attracting more visitors.
Our day started much earlier than we would have liked because Tilly woke us scratching on Blue's crate. We decided to take her with for a walk on the beach.
