Another Sunny Day

We walked to Chevron Island for breakfast. According to the health app on my phone I was active walking for 5.8 kms, but according to Google maps the return trip is only 3 kms. I don't know how I got credit for the extra steps. If it is not raining tomorrow morning we will head in a different direction for a change.

My major project for the day was cutting 5mm off the bottom of the toilet door. I considered different items to use as a straight edge but finally realised an unused cupboard door was ideal. When our kitchen was installed about six years ago several pieces were not made to the correct size. I kept all of the rejected doors and panels and have put them to use. Today one of those doors clamped to the toilet door provided a simple straight edge for my circular saw. I did the cutting outside but moved the door back inside for painting. Tilly thought the extension lead created a space for her to sit.


After trimming off the damaged bottom of the door I sanded it and painted on two coats of primer. This evening I painted a coat of oil based enamel in the hope it will make the bottom of the door more resistant to moisture. We should be able to rehang the door tomorrow. I also finished the first coat of enamel on the towing gear.  A second coat will be required so that will take another two days to finish. 

Tilly had to have her final vaccination today so I took her to the vet who checked her over thoroughly during the visit. She doesn't mind travelling in the car or being in her smaller crate. I obtained a copy of their vaccination certificates to carry with us when we travel with them in the caravan, just in case we should ever need to put them into kennels.

I have planted the bromeliads given to me by a neighbour. Each day I do a little in the garden, but can't spend hours gardening. I managed to offload the aloe vera plants to our housekeeper. We still have one pot with aloe vera but I never think to use it on burns or other minor ailments. 

I was sitting on the couch knitting and Blue wanted to join me. Normally he stays on the floor but must have needed to be close to me and his sheep. I laid out a pet blanket but of course he ended up sleeping on the couch not the blanket.

Broken Hill to Burra

We left Broken Hill about 8am for our drive to Burra. Our first stop was at Mannahill. We followed this load of sheep as we dawdled through roadworks. On a recommendation from friends we explored Terowie, an historic town that is almost abandoned. The town grew late in the nineteenth century as a transhipment point from broad gauge rail to narrow gauge. In the 1970s the line to Peterborough was converted to broad gauge and Terowie became a near ghost town. Several abandoned shops are now owned by the South Australian Government. Unfortunately there is a risk associated with asbestos being blown around the town. The population fell from about 2000 to 130. In 1942 General Macarthur passed through Terowie on his way to Adelaide and Melbourne. Palm House Adelaide Botanic Gardens

One of our friends needed to see a dentist in Adelaide so I drove her to the city. While she was spending a couple of hours in the dentist chair, I had a great time with her partner visiting the Palm House at the Botanical Garden. Blue enjoyed his walk through the park and being admired by strangers. This German made iron greenhouse was imported in 1875. It was affected by rust and eventually restored thanks to donations and a Federal grant. It houses very interesting plants from Madagascar. The straight sections of trunks to the left of this photo are covered in spikes and small leaves, resulting in an interesting texture It was a lovely sunny day in Adelaide with the temperature around 26°. Back at Cape Jervis a freezing cold wind was blowing. BOM reports the temperature at 10.15pm as 10.3° but feels like 6.7°. Nundle and Hanging Rock

I took Bluey for a drive to Nundle. At the Chaffey Dam I met two people from our caravan park with their 6 month old Cavoodle. The dogs would have loved to play but maybe some time in the early morning before it gets too hot. The dam was built on the Peel River and is the main water supply for Tamworth. It is at 33% capacity but earlier this year Tamworth was on Level 5 water restrictions. There is a basic camping ground at the dam. At Nundle Blue was frightened by a group of school kids running past him. They had come on a bus to use the Nundle Pool. I sat at the Park Cafe with a coffee giving him time to watch the kids playing in the park. The historic Nundle Woollen Mill sells knitting wool, socks and clothing, including denim jeans that have some merino wool in the material. There is a viewing area where visitors can see the very old machines still in use. The mill attracted 30,000 visitors to Nundle annually (pre Covid).
