Puppy Gastroenteritis

Our puppy's upset tummy did not abate. When I saw blood appear in his poops I called the emergency vet service because vomiting and severe diarrhoea can be symptoms of parvovirus. There is an outbreak of parvo on the Gold Coast due to some irresponsible dog owners not getting their puppies and dogs vaccinated. It is often deadly to puppies so by 10.30pm I was parked outside the Animal Emergency Service. I had to wait in the car until a vet was available to call me. The first step was a parvo test and that fortunately proved negative. The vet then returned to take Blue inside for a thorough check and rang me to say he had a bout of gastro and he should be put back onto dry food only, and all meat should be cooked. Their experience is 90% of dog gastro cases were most likely caused by eating raw meat. I had the option of leaving him there on fluids and drugs to suppress vomitting, but opted to take him home prepared to have disturbed sleep.

It was midnight by the time we got home and when I put him to bed in his crate there was not a sound from him. He had run around all day with Tilly and further exhausted himself with his gastro, so slept until 6am. There was one more clean up job in the morning that led me to keeping him crated most of the day, despite his vocal objections. He was OK when beside me while I was working in the garage, and when I was outside positioning one of the acrylic sheets for the gatehouse. Sometimes I put Tilly in with him so they could have a gentle game, but there were periods of loud crying and barking. I plan to keep him crated to manage his toilet training. Fortunately there were periods of sleeping.

After I had drilled the holes to screw the acrylic sheets to the gatehouse, I enlisted Anita to help hold one in place while I marked the positions to drill the holes in the wall. I finished the screws that go into the timber support I put in, but the clouds came over so I had a good excuse not to start the messy job of drilling holes in the mortar wall. I retreated inside and did some knitting while Blue and Tilly were sleeping.

By late afternoon the sun had returned so I went out for some fresh air. I checked out the progress on the three houses being built near us. This one is uninspiring but I have greater expectations for the other two based on the work done so far.

I caught up with some neighbours while walking and stayed long enough to enjoy the sunset over the Nerang River. There was a large gathering of locals in the park, probably not enforcing their own social distancing, so I avoided them and spoke with my neighbour who has returned from a long period in hospital. She told me her doctor had said 1.5m was not sufficient and she should make sure nobody comes any closer than 2m.
