Day 3 - Country Turns Pink
This evening we are going to the fund raiser concert "Country Turns Pink". We went to town for breakfast, but picked a cafe that had just taken an order for 15 take away meals! We waited 15 minutes for our coffees and 40 minutes for food, but that's not surprising given the number of people in town.
We think overall the number of festival visitors may be down as Peel St was not very crowded. One of our Roadie musicians did not come because of concerns about the Gippsland fires at her mum's place. I hadn't noticed these mosaics in Peel St before, possibly because there were fewer people around.
The Kathmandu outdoor clothing store on Peel St always attracts our custom. I tried on several items all marked 'small' but which were different sizes. The manager explained the store was changing over to different sizing, along with many other major brands such as Levi's. The new more expensive stock is basically larger within each size category. I bought a size 8 top that fits - me size 8? That size is for slight Asian women!
We can hear the music from Southgate Inn 150m across the rugby field. Tonight there is an outdoor concert featuring Cold Chisel, previously known as a pub rock group but now apparently a famous country music group. They have attracted top country stars to perform with them - Kasey Chambers, Troy Cassar-Daley and Paul Kelly. The stage is about 300m away and we could hear Paul Kelly singing as we walked to Wests. Troy Cassar-Daley was unable to drive through Cunningham's Gap and had to turn around and go via Toowoomba. We were so lucky in our timing to miss the blocked highways.
Before tonight's concert we had time to listen to Johnny Taylor sing. He came to Wave Rock while we were on the WA Aussie Road Crew tour where he sang with an acoustic guitar. Tonight he had a three piece band and an electric guitar and was really good.
Catherine Britt opened Country Turns Pink. She had been treated for breast cancer before we met her on one of the Aussie Road Crew tours. Felicity Urquhart has a fabulous voice. She has been dealing with the consequences of her husband committing suicide last year.
Another of the best acts in the concert was the compere Darren Carr who is very funny. The established stars introduce up and coming artists who each perform a song in front of the large audience. My favourite newbie was the 12 year old daughter of the Hillbilly Goats - her voice is very strong and she was so self assured singing a number she learnt only four days ago.
